A New Chapter For A Familiar Name
Nissan Micra Enters a New Electric Era
Few cars have become part of British motoring life quite like the Nissan Micra.
For more than 40 years, the Micra has been a familiar sight on UK roads, loved for its reliability, efficiency, accessibility and character. It has been a first car, a family runabout, a trusted commuter and a dependable choice for drivers who simply wanted a small car that was easy to live with.
Now, one of Britain’s best-known small cars is beginning a bold new chapter, returning as a fully electric hatchback designed for the next generation of drivers.
The Micra first arrived in Europe in the early 1980s with a clear and simple purpose. Compact, economical and easy to drive, the original K10 Micra offered exactly what many motorists wanted from a small car: low running costs, dependable engineering and everyday practicality.
Its appeal was never about extravagance. Instead, the Micra built its reputation on being straightforward, well made and reassuringly useful — qualities that would define the name for decades.
The Micra’s connection with Britain became even stronger in 1992, when the second-generation K11 model entered production at Nissan’s Sunderland plant. From that point on, the Micra was not just a Nissan small car sold in Britain. It was a Nissan small car built in Britain.

The K11 quickly became one of the most recognisable small cars of its era, with its rounded styling, clever packaging and friendly character helping it stand out in a competitive market. In 1993, it was named European Car of the Year, becoming the first Japanese-badged car to win the award.
That success helped cement the Micra’s reputation as one of the most complete small cars of its time. It was compact but practical, simple but well engineered, and efficient without feeling flimsy.
The third-generation K12 Micra, launched in 2002, continued the Sunderland-built story with an even more distinctive look. Taller, rounder and more expressive, it brought extra comfort, clever storage and technology that was unusual in the small car class at the time, including keyless entry and start on selected models.
It also gave rise to one of the most memorable Micra variants: the Micra C+C. With its folding hard-top roof, the C+C added a fun, open-air twist to the range and remains one of the most characterful Micras sold in the UK.
By the time Micra production at Sunderland ended in 2010, more than 2.3 million examples had been built there across the K11 and K12 generations. For a small car, its impact on British manufacturing was enormous.

Later generations showed how the Micra continued to adapt. The K13 focused on global efficiency and affordability, while the sharper K14, launched in 2017, brought a more grown-up design, improved technology and a more premium feel for European buyers.
Yet the Micra’s appeal has always gone beyond facts and figures. Many drivers have a personal connection with the car. They learned to drive in one, owned one as a first car, borrowed one from a family member or relied on one for school runs, shopping trips, commutes and everyday journeys.
That familiarity is what turned the Micra from a small hatchback into a British favourite.
Now, the story continues with the arrival of the New Nissan Micra as a fully electric model. It is a fitting reinvention for a car that has always been about efficient, accessible and easy everyday driving.
Built as an EV from the ground up, the New Micra brings modern electric performance, clever packaging and low running costs to a name already trusted by generations of drivers. Its styling also nods to Micras of the past, with distinctive proportions and bold lighting that give the new model its own sense of character.
At Crayford & Abbs, the return of the Micra is especially significant. The company has been selling Nissan vehicles for 24 years, while business founder Kevin Abbs’ experience with the brand goes back more than 30 years. That long-standing Nissan knowledge means customers can speak to a team that understands the brand, its history and the changing needs of local drivers.
The technology may have changed, but the idea remains familiar: a compact Nissan designed to make daily driving simple, enjoyable and efficient.
More than four decades after the Micra first arrived in Britain, it is ready to win over drivers once again — this time with electric power.
Test drives in the New Nissan Micra are available now at Crayford & Abbs Bodham.
